CHARACTER INFO

Character Name: Yang Xiao Long
Character Canon: RWBY

History: Here's her page on the RWBY wiki.

AU History: Yang Xiao Long came from a middle-class family in Union. Both of her parents were Enlightened, so it was little surprise when she became one too; they were Historians who worked with the Delvers in unearthing the truths about the city. Yang had a reasonably stable home life as a result when she grew up, but she was left on her own more than was strictly wise; her parents were often busy going down into the depths of Old City and looking for clues to the city's past.

She had a sister who was two years younger than her, named Ruby Rose. Yang was very protective of her younger sister and tried to keep an eye out for her as they grew up. She did her best to protect Ruby and make sure that she was safe, but this sometimes involved a lot of meddling in her younger sister's life. It wasn't always appreciated.

Yang moved through a lot of circles as she entered her teenage years. She began to see some of the shadier sides of life in Union; she was familiar with the Delvers thanks to her parents' work, and when she encountered some criminals quietly selling artifacts brought up from Old City, she knew what they were. She got involved with these elements -- mostly in trying to track the stolen artifacts down and return them, but that meant making contacts, and she twice ended up in a jail cell over night when she had a misunderstanding with the Swords.

She eventually realized that running solo like that wouldn't work out so well for her; she got into a little too much trouble and made a few enemies that she wasn't proud of. She decided that she wanted to get out more and put her abilities as an Enlightened to use.

Yang decided to become an adventurer after that; she has been studying in the University to become a historian like her parents, but classwork isn't the sort of thing that grabs her. Fighting is much more her speed. After the earthquakes and recent events, though, it looks like there is plenty of room for someone who does that, which suits Yang Xiao Long just fine.

Canon Personality: The first thing people notice about Yang is that she is incredibly cheerful and outgoing. She specializes in exuberance; when she enters a new situation or meets new people, she tackles it gleefully, and jumps into making friends without hesitation. Yang doesn't really get nervous about talking to people or meeting new people. The downside to this is that she can come on a little strong; she can leap right at shy people and throw them off with sudden cheerful talkativeness.

This plays into the fact that Yang is rather playful and boastful. She thinks highly of herself, and while that confidence has seen her through a lot, she can edge right into narcissism and full-on boasting about herself sometimes. When she goofs around, too, she doesn't take things seriously; she cheerfully goes along with Ruby's suggestion to make bunk beds in canon, which results in a psychotically haphazard construction of stacked beds.

Sometimes, she doesn't take social situations seriously, and her playing around can grate on peoples' nerves. Yang tends to take people at face value, which means if she thinks someone is annoying, she says so and she acts on it; sometimes she can miss more complicated details about someone's background or personality (like how she just doesn't get Weiss, sometimes). On the other hand, this helps her deal with people.

Yang takes people at face value; she doesn't care about prejudices, social standing, or any of that. In canon, she doesn't care when a team member is revealed to be a nonhuman; all she cares about is that they're on the team. If someone is her friend, it doesn't matter who they worked with or where they came from. Yang is incredibly loyal to people, but it's a personal loyalty first and foremost.

This makes her protective of others. She cares very strongly for her sister; when she is in danger, Yang rushes to her assistance. She also looks after her social life, dragging Ruby around to make friends. This goes for her friends, too; Yang tries to look out for the people around her. This can make her overprotective, though, and even smothering sometimes. Yang doesn't always mind her own business.

Yang does these things impulsively. She tends to act on instinct more than forethought; she is a hothead. She might often act laid back and cheerful, but she leaps gleefully at those social situations and throws herself into them. She protects people, and sometimes too much, without even thinking about what she's doing first.

When she gets angry, though (like when her hair gets damaged), this becomes abundantly clear. Yang loses her temper and starts shouting. She can snap at friends and freak out; moreover, when it comes to people she is fighting, she will start lobbing punches left and right. Yang can get violent when she gets angry, but this violence is focused at her enemies.

AU Deviation: The most immediately notable change is that Yang is not attending a school to become an elite monster hunter. This isn't an enormous change given Brave New World's, uh, world; she is still dedicated to protecting people and the like, and she is studying to become a historian someday (if not very well) instead. However, she is not being groomed to be an elite and independent operative; she is also not on a team led by her younger sister in that regard.

The other big change is that Yang has a broader protective streak. In her canon, the world is not widely thought to be precarious, and is instead in a famously peaceful era. Union isn't precarious, but life is a little more complicated there; Yang has a sense of loyalty to Union's people and wants to defend them. That said, she is far more focused on the people of Union than Union as a political body.

She is not, however, rebellious; she just doesn't give the administration the most thought. Also, while it's unclear in the show, she has had some run-ins with criminals in Union.

Canon Abilities: People in RWBY have two main powers. Aura is the ability to project force fields, stemming from an internal energy. It lets hunters and huntresses take more damage than would otherwise be possible, and act as barriers to hold particularly deadly blows at bay. Aura does not appear to vary from character to character

A semblance is a unique supernatural ability that a character possesses. Yang's semblance is the ability to create fire, primarily as explosive force. She appears to channel this through her weapon, a pair of golden gauntlets called Ember Celica. The gauntlets contain rounds that drop casings when fired; this appears to add explosive punch to blows with her fist.

Finally, Yang is a talented martial artist. She can punch and kick with the best of them.

Enlightened Abilities: Yang is a God of War. She does not really do the "thinky" type things some Enlightened do (and notably, in the webseries, she much prefers to punch and run and jump than otherwise). She is, in fact, kind of singularly bad at anything else. Her three types (due to God of War) are Fighting, Fire, and Normal.

Yang's first evolution focuses much more on Fighting moves, with some limited use Fire type attacks that deal large amounts of damage. Her Normal moves are mostly limited to the occasional buff, plus utilitarian things like Quick Attack and some simple damage dealers. She also has a few counter attack type Fighting moves. She can also run ridiculously fast and do crazy jumps, and basically do absurd Hong Kong action movie stunts.

Her evolutions don't change her look too much because of her Normal type. However, the second Evolution makes Yang have a much wider array of Fire abilities; this includes a lot more hurling fireballs and explosions, with a handful of multiple target attacks. She also has some Fire/Fighting type moves just for good measure, and a few more buffs from Normal. The Hong Kong action movie stunts increase accordingly, too, and get into a few outright physics defying things.

Her last evolution basically takes this out to its logical conclusion, with even stronger attack abilities. She can basically blow apart entire floors of buildings and do large area attacks, plus lots of rapid-fire Fighting abilities. She also will do Hong Kong action movie stunts that involve things like running up walls, double jumps in the air, and other types of things.

Finally, Yang has a pair of gold-plated gauntlets called Ember Celica. It's a Steel type item; this lets her parry some attacks, and then deliver Steel-type attacks with them. It also has a simple late nineteenth century-style firearm built into the wrist, which can shoot extremely close-range rounds (that would also be Steel type).

Starter Pokémon: Yang has an Eevee that she bonded with when she was very young. He occasionally tries to stick a pork pie hat on his head and pretend to be a hard-boiled detective, so she named him Miller. Occasionally, Yang will insist people address him as Detective Miller, but he has no sleuthing skills and this is done entirely to annoy people that she dislikes.

She also has a Purrloin that came up during the Old City invasion caused by the earthquakes. Yang bonded with her and named her Viola. She is sassy and sometimes shreds Yang's furniture. This is not okay.

Notes/Special Considerations: Nyet!

SAMPLES

If desired, you may answer some of the following questions. The questions must be answered in-character, as if they are being asked by a teacher, mentor, or superior. If your character is lying in their answer, please identify it as a lie, the purpose of these is to get an idea of how you will play your character in lieu of the other sample options. 4 questions answered can be used as a substitute for a first-person sample, and 6 questions answered can be used as a substitute for a third-person sample. Both samples may be replaced in this manner. If the character doesn't say enough in their answer, we may request a few more answers for an acceptable sample.

1) What do you feel your role in Union is?

"Duh! I'm an Enlightened. That means I'm supposed to make sure Union stays safe, find new places to explore and kick the ass of anyone or anything that wants to hurt people in Union. I guess I'm also gonna learn about history and stuff. Yeah, that'll be... fun. Really."

2) To what lengths would you go to rescue your allies if they were lost in the wilderness?

"Is this a trick question? You keep looking until you find them. And you're gonna find them, because you don't stop. Ever. You never leave someone behind. And if they don't make it... at least they're buried at home, right?"

3) What does the story of the Savior mean to you?

"Well... it's a nice story. She risked her life to save people and protect who she cared about, which is important. I don't know if it's really true, though. It kinda happened a long time ago, you know, and who knows what really happened in all of that."

4) What aspects and traits do you respect most in your individual fellow man?

"Being straightforward and fun! I like it when people say what they mean and they're honest with each other. And when they're not sticks in the mud, you know? It's important to be able to go out and have a good time, and not rain all over other peoples' parades. Nothing sucks the joy out of the room like someone who can't take a joke. Or take it easy."

5) What do you look for in the Pokémon with whom you bond?

"I wanna make sure we're gonna get along! Pokémon are great, but I wanna make sure they can keep up with me and I don't have to spend all of my time taking care of them. They should be independent, too, you know? Life's more fulfilling that way."

6) The gods of old have returned. How would you be judged if you were chosen as a representative of humanity?

"They would totally say that I'm the best and humanity rocked their socks off." [PARTIAL LIE: Yang would be way more nervous about this. She thinks she'd be okay, but sometimes she's done shady things... and she does tend to put humans first a little.]

7) You are alone and bereft of your Pokémon allies, upon what strengths do you rely on to see yourself safely home?

"People have to take care of themselves! I like my Pokémon as much as the next gal, but I wanna make sure if I'm in a tough spot, I can take care of myself. That means I'm not expecting them to do all the work for me, you know? It's fairer to them. So I keep myself in good shape and make sure if I have to fight alone, I can get out alive!"

8) What would you say is your greatest duty, and why?

"Oh, you know. I'm an Enlightened! Protect and serve Union, right?" [LIE: This is important to Yang, but the thing she cares about most is protecting the people she's closest to. This especially goes for her family. If she had to pick between close friends or family and Union, there wouldn't be any question. Probably some angst, though.]

9) You plunge into the depths of the Old City. What is it that you seek from the past? Treasure, technology, wisdom?

"There's plenty of wisdom down there, don't get me wrong. But most people are down there for treasure or technology, and I think that's what you gotta focus on. People are gonna want that, and if responsible people get it, that's better for everyone. Wisdom's great, but finding old technology is better."

10) In your eyes, what is absolutely unforgivable.

"Turning on your friends and family. You gotta protect the people closest to you, and you can't ever betray them."
